Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a result of an experience that is overwhelming, frightening, and beyond our control. A car crash, be the victim of an assault or see an accident. It is also a psychological reaction occurring after experiencing a highly stressing event such as witnessing (whether directly or via other medium of information – TV, Internet, etc.) terrorist act, violence, natural disaster or criminal event.

Most people, in time, get over experiences like this without needing trauma treatment. In some people though, traumatic experiences set off a reaction that can last for many months or years. This is called PTSD and needs professional help.

When a traumatic event happens in your life, it shakes you to the core. You don’t feel safe, and the event keeps replaying itself over and over again.

SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and SNRIs (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) such as Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac and Effexor are amongst the effective treatments used by the modern medicine. Medication may be a short-term or long-term treatment option, depending on severity of symptoms, other medical conditions, and other individual circumstances.
